We arrived at Guzzanello about 6:30 in the morning. It was a beautiful day which was a change from the other two times we have been there for the marcia and it has poured rain. The day before we had come in the afternoon to help set up the tents, tables and other equipment. On Sunday morning I helped make sandwiches (bread and cold meat) and Dom was a flagger in the parking area. Most of the work was done by about 10:30 or so. After the stragglers finished walking it was time to break everything down and set up for lunch.
The tables for lunch were set up under the trees in the shade. Everyone who had worked (and quite a few who had not but were members of the group) sat down and enjoyed a multi-course Italian pranzo. There was antipasto, pasta with a red sauce, roast pork and roast chicken, salad, roast potatoes, bread and desserts. There was also lots of donated wine followed by limoncello and grappa. The food was excellent and it was fun to compare three different homemade vintages.
Most people were just getting started on the limoncello and grappa when Dom and I left about 3:30 pm. It was really a fun day. We enjoy being so involved in something that is, for us, quintessentially Italian. It always seems that we are just getting tucked into the fabric of the community when it is time for us to leave.
We are looking forward to being back in Italy in late September. Among the things we have planned are a trip to Rome for the canonization of Blessed Marianne Cope (a U.S. nun who founded an order of nuns who worked with lepers on Molokai in Hawaii) and Blessed Kateri who will become the first Native American saint. Five others are also being canonized. On our way home we are stopping in Austin TX for the U.S. Grand Prix Formula 1 race at the new Circuit of the Americas track. I also plan to take a couple weeks of language classes in Lucca and hopefully improve both my Italian comprehension and speaking abilities.
